Description and Technical Specification of the Ship

The sailing ship La Grace is a faithful replica of a brig from the second half of the 18th century. Josef Dvorský and Daniel Rosecký, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, built her from the plans published in 1768 by the Swedish admiral Fredrik Henrik af Chapman in his book "Architectura navalis mercatoria". He was probably the greatest ship designer of all time, the man who laid the foundations of modern shipbuilding to precise plans. Long before Ford, he introduced "assembly-line" shipbuilding from prefabricated parts, and thanks to that he cut the building time tenfold. Many warships and merchant ships were built to his plans. Every faithful reconstruction of a replica of a historical sailing ship from the 15th to the 18th century is based on them.

Brigs were the most common type of merchant ship of the period, because they did not require a large crew. For their speed and manoeuvrability they were also used by navies as dispatch vessels, for fighting pirates and for spying.

Although La Grace is designed so that not even Admiral Nelson would spot a historical inconsistency at first glance, inside she is fitted with all the modern electronics, safety systems and equipment that allow her to sail safely and let the crew spend pleasant moments resting or learning.
